Service Suspended

Regretfully, due to changes in my working pattern the need to do more work to earn a crust I will not be writing on here at the moment.

I may get a chance to resurrect Hampshire Bus Changes at a later date, but it is likely that the blog will be deleted altogether over the coming months. Thank you for reading, may all your buses be Wright Cadets.

After digging around the mighty Interweb the Xelabus timetables for their new service are finally available. They did publish a timetable as one of the readers at the Southampton Bus Blog found a printed timetable at a bus stop in Southampton; and this has now appeared on their website. The Xelabus service is a 1 PVR with an hours lunch break in the middle so it looks like it will be a single drivers day with school runs at either end.

Okay, okay…. I admit it I have been “busy” thinking about the recent First Hampshire changes and have neglected the rest of the county in recent weeks.

There are very few changes to services, with Bluestar having recently changed its timetable for the Bluestar1 and First Hampshire & Dorset having a major shake up in the coming months for both Fareham and Southampton.

This Week Though:

14 March
Southampton – Xelabus

X13 From Portswood Sainsbury’s, St Denys Road, Belmont Road (new link), Portswood By Pass, Lodge Road, Archers Road, Northlands Road, The Avenue, Westwood Road, Brookvale Road, Portswood Road to Portswood Sainsbury’s.
X14 From Portswood Sainsbury’s, St Denys Road, Bitterne Park Triangle, Midanbury Lane, Witts Hill, Wakefield Road, Meggeson Avenue, Townhill Way, Chartwell Green, Mansbridge Road, Mansbridge, Wessex Lane, Woodmill Lane, Langhorn Road, Woodcote Rd (new link), Mayfield Road (new link), Portswood Road to Portswood Sainsbury’s.

Xelabus have still to publish any sort of timetable on their website regarding the new services; nor are there any timetables published in the usual places. This may be a company run by an enthusiast to “traditional values” however the tradition that I am expecting to see next is a destination blind with “Service” as your direction.

Finally – First Hampshire has published the long-awaited changes to their BRT timetables and changes to the services around it.

Service E1: This service REPLACES the 86
Gosport Ferry – Whitworth Road – The Windsor Castle – Brockhurst – Tichbourne Way – BRT – Fareham Railway Station - Fareham Bus Station

Service E2: This service REPLACES the 82
Gosport Ferry – War Memorial Hospital – Anns Hill – Brockhurst – Holbrook – BRT – Fareham Railway Station - Fareham Bus Station

There are some items to note. There are several trips that will NOT  use the BRT, these will be running direct via the A32 from the bottom of the BRT to the Railway Station (via Western Way). There is no real indication why, although the BRT will be “closing it’s bus gates” at around 2300 each night. There will be EIGHT buses each way each hour serving the BRT during the off-peak, operating with High Quality, High Specification buses that have underseat-lighting, wood effect flooring, leather seats and free Wi-Fi.

There are added services operating on the peak hours by new First Hampshire service

X88 – Gosport – Stokes Bay – Rowner – Wych Lane – BRT – Fareham Rail Station – Fareham Bus Station

These services will replace current service 88 peak trips and will use the BRT from Wych Lane to Redland Lane. This diversion will only run on weekdays with a normal 88 operating on Saturday and Sunday. First Hampshire say that the 14 BRT specification vehicles for the E1 and E2 will not appear on the X88; but it would not surprise me if they make surprise appearances in the first few weeks to advertise the new X88 service.

Other First Hampshire Changes

There are other changes to accommodate the new BRT:

Service 83 will be extended and replaces Service 31 to Fareham College

This will run half-hourly during the day Gosport – Criterion – Albermale Avenue – Brockhurst – A32 – Fareham Bus Station – Fareham College.
The extension to the 83 will only run in an anti-clockwise loop around Fareham’s West End. This is the same loop that First Hampshire have experimented with in the peaks before, running direct to Fareham College before heading down to what was the Admiral Cunningham. The Frequency of the 83 will cut on its Gosport / Fareham section to Every 30 Minutes though.

Service 85 will run Every 20 Minutes Daytime; Every 40 Minutes Evenings; Every 30 Minutes Sundays

Other First Hampshire NON BRT changes

In preparation for the new Southampton – Fareham – Portsmouth services there are some changes to bring the 72 and 34 to their summer timetables before the changes to the 72.
The 34 will restart its Sunday hourly services  between Fareham – Stubbington and Cherque Farm (or Chark Farm to those of us that remember)

Has First Hampshire Missed a Trick?

With the new BRT services starting to run I would have hoped that First would consider a through service from Gosport to the Queen Alexandra Super Hospital in Portsmouth. Although First have had to make sure that the new purple buses are not going to cost the earth, you would have thought that at least one of the new services would have run through, even it was only at times that people could attend routine out-patients appointments.

First Hampshire have decided to replace the 57 with the X4, running via the M275 into Portsmouth all day long. This cuts another – albeit infrequent – direct service from Fareham to the bottom of the QA site for those making the long trip around the water. It is understandable that First Hampshire and Stagecoach in Portsmouth run their express service via the M275 from Gunwharf Quays to QA, but there are those that would prefer not to use the Gosport Ferry (at additional cost) are disadvantaged.

I wonder why First Hampshire did not run the E2 service limited stop calling at Cams Hill School, Portchester Precinct, Southampton Road Waterfront, Racecourse Lane and QA Hospital. It would probably add around 30 minutes to the round trip of the E2 and offer multiple interchanges with other First Hampshire services in Gosport (like Brockhurst) to reach the hospital. This would also show a bit of commitment from First Hampshire to the rest of the bigger scheme of the South Hampshire “Rapid Transit” of old!

In what is already a busy month in the First Hampshire offices in Empress Road, the company have now had plans approved to virtually recast the Southampton plan; something that was already suspected with the changes to the 72 and 80.

The new route list appears like this (with my thoughts on route in italics):

1: Weston – City – Lordshill or Nursling
Thoughts: Service 1 then Service 17

2: Lordshill – City – Thornhill/Townhill Park
X2: City – Freemantle – Millbrook

3: Lordshill – City – Thornhill
Thoughts: This might just be a re-numbering of the 10

4/4A/X4: City – Woolston – Locks Heath – Gosport/Fareham/Portsmouth

5: Bassett Green – City – Sholing
Thoughts: Service 7 and Service 11 or 12

6: City – Hamble
Thoughts: Just a re-numbering of the 16

7: City – Townhill Park
Thoughts: Just a re-numbering of the 3

8: General Hospital – City – Hedge End/Botley
Thoughts:  Service 5 and Service 8

9: City Centre  - Sholing
Thoughts: Service 11 or Service 12

10: City – Shirley – Totton
Thoughts: Sounds like a straight replacement for the 4

S1 RSH Hospital – City – Lordshill North
Thoughts: Just a re-numbering of 21

Velvet have announced that because of customer concerns the proposed changes to some of their timetables will be delayed

The HAMBLE service A will start on 1st April
The NIGHT services N3 and N16 will on 4th May
The MARWELL service will start 6th April

The PORTSMOUTH and “NORMAL” service A and changes to service C will be delayed until 11th June

The summary of the changes to go ahead are

1st April Service A – Eastleigh – Hedge End – Netley – Hamble
Two off-peak round trips

6th April Service M – Eastleigh – Marwell
Hourly; Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays Only

4th May Service N3 and N16
Friday and Saturday Nightbus services replacing Nightstar3 and Nightstar16

It’s almost as though Christmas has come again as I flick through the VOSA service registrations this morning; First Hampshire have registered yet more service changes that leave me somewhat…. bewildered? First Provincial seem to be recasting all of their Gosport/Fareham to Southampton services in the upcoming months.

There are some striking features to all of this. Firstly there are quite a few timetable changes lodged for services through Lee On Solent and Stubbington, the 33, 34, 35 all changing their timetables; presumably some connection with the bus and driver duties that are now moving over to the Eclipse service?

The Southampton services are changing significantly and the service numbers as you know them will cease to operate:

Service 4: Gosport – Stoke Road – Lee On Solent – Stubbington – Titchfield (Southampton Hill) – Lochs Heath – Warsash – Lowford – Woolston – Southampton
Service 4A: Fareham – Titchfield (Coach Hill) –   Primate Road – Locks Heath – Warsash – Lowford – Woolston – Southampton
Service X4:  Portsmouth – M275 – Southampton Road – Portchester – Cams – Fareham – Titchfield – Abshott Road – Locks Heath – Park Gate – Lowford – Woolston – Southampton

A quick bit of maths suggests to me an increase in frequency for most of the Southampton to Fareham sections and for Fareham to Portsmouth
Nearly EVERY Fareham route has significant changes coming in April then….. Nice.

But its the numbering of the services that I don’t trust. There is already a First Hampshire service 4 in Southampton, running around the west of the city then out to Totton; so why cause a deliberate conflict? Is this quietly a new Eclipse intended service?

So – a quick round up of what I have seen……

With all the talk of the new BRT bus lane in Gosport and Fareham; the first glimmers of hope are coming forth in the form of First Hampshire’s service registrations.

First spotted by http://sebusscene.blogspot.com the registrations for the E1 and E2 have been accepted; as has the cancellations of the 82 and 86.

This would confirm what I posted previously about the likely service changes and seems to have come to fruition.

In other changes; service 88 will now have an X88 variant. This is likely to be the peak time diversion along the BRT confirming again what the maps have generally hinted at.

The 31 Fareham College service is also being replaced by an extension to the 83. Whether this will be identical in route with just a merging of vehicles is unclear; but anything to keep dead machines out of the bus station bays one would suspect.

Recent service registrations have been accepted by the VOSA from newest Stagecoach acquisition Fleet Buzz. For those that have never heard of this company it was previously part of Countrywide Travel who operated from a depot at Oakley, on the outskirts of Basingstoke. The company was split up, with the coaching unit heading to Simon Weaver and Weavaway Travel; the bus services moving to a new depot in Farnham as Fleet Buzz.

Stagecoach bought Fleet Buzz at the end of last year and have made their first significant changes – apart from adding the fleet to their 5 digit numbering system – all in the Aldershot area:

13: Schoolbus for Brighton Hill / Cliddesden

70: Elvetham Heath – Fleet – Aldershot Bus Station
Hourly Monday to Friday

71: Elvetham Heath – Fleet – Farnham
Hourly Monday to Friday

72: Aldershot – Fleet – Reading
Hourly Monday to Saturday

73 73M 73X: Zebon Copse – Fleet – Frimley Park Hospital
Half Hourly Monday to Saturday

75: Schoolbus for Calthorpe Park School

79: Yateley – Fleet – Farnham 6th Form College
Monday to Friday

80 81: Schoolbus for Yateley School

82: Fleet – Farnborough – Reading
Hourly Monday to Saturday

83: Schoolbus for Yateley School

145: Three Mile Cross – Wokingham – Winnersh
Tuesdays Only

Now that is an extensive list but many of the services are duplicates of ones that are already being operated by Fleet Buzz “pre-Stagecoach”. it will be interesting to see how the new timetables compare when they are released by either Stagecoach on their corporate site, or the Fleet Buzz site which still has details of its Christmas operating hours published. There are some significant changes in regards to their services heading to Reading, however this might just be a standardisation operation for the services.

Just a quick reminder for those of you that use Bluestar1 that it changes its timetables this weekend. The summary of changes is

Southampton to Winchester

The 0705 (every weekday) bus from Southampton will run via Winchester Railway Station
The 0705 (Schoolday Duplicate) will now run all the time, but depart Southampton at 0715 schooldays and 0725 school holidays. This trip will run via Winchester Railway Station.
The 0730 departure will now leave Southampton at 0725 and will be the first bus NOT to call at Winchester Railway Station

The 0750, 0815 and 0840 Bluestar 1 departures from Southampton will be replaced with 0805, 0825 and 0845. This means though that for anyone missing the 0725 at Southampton there is a 40 minute wait for the next Bluestar 1.

The off peak weekday service will gain an extra 5 minutes running time. A journey is now timetabled to take exactly 1 hour.

The 1750 departure from Southampton will now depart at 1755.

Winchester to Southampton

The 0650, 0710 and 0730 departures from Winchester will now depart at 0655, 0715 and 0735

The 0800 and 0825 departures from Winchester will now depart at 0755 and 0820

The service will then be every 20 minutes at 20 40 and 00; instead of 10 30 and 50 until 1820; then 1845, 1905 (to Chandlers Ford only) and then the sane evening timetable as now.

An extra schoolday service will run at 1645 from Winchester Railway Station via the city centre and onwards to Southampton

The 1712 schools service from The Nuffield area to Southampton will still run.

Saturdays

FROM Southampton: There is a new journey from Chandlers Ford to Winchester at 0901 and the extra 5 minutes journey time re-appears.

From Winchester: The 0740, 0810, 0830 and 0850 departures are replaced by 0735, 0800, 0820, 0845 and then a 20 Minute frequency from 0900 again 10 minutes out from the current timetable.
